West Lake poetry, Longjing tea and Southern Song refinement
Private Field Guide · Hangzhou
Hangzhou's identity is inseparable from West Lake, a cultural landscape shaped by causeways, temples, pagodas, gardens and poetic associations. UNESCO recognizes its influence on garden design in China, Japan and Korea, while the surrounding hills preserve the tea landscapes of West Lake Longjing.
Hangzhou is not about one panoramic viewpoint. Its refinement comes from sequences: a causeway disappearing into mist, temple roofs among trees, a tea garden on the western hills and the restrained material culture of the Southern Song.
Four sequences across lake, tea, temple and archaeology.

The tea plantations west of the lake are integral to Hangzhou's cultural landscape. A reputable tea visit should explain origin, harvest, hand-processing and the difference between genuine West Lake Longjing and broader regional production.
Lingyin Temple and the Buddhist carvings of Feilai Peak sit within a wooded valley west of the lake, adding religious history and sculptural detail to the landscape experience.
The Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and exceptional evidence of a Late Neolithic regional state with rice agriculture, social differentiation and a unified belief system.
Seasonality
March to May brings spring colour and the early tea season, with periodic rain. September to November is generally comfortable, and autumn osmanthus adds fragrance to the western hills. Summer is hot and humid; winter is quieter and can be beautifully spare.
Our Approach
Choose a lakeside or western-hills base, visit West Lake more than once, and avoid reducing Longjing to a retail stop. Pair landscape with scholarship through a tea specialist, Buddhist-art interpretation or a full Liangzhu visit.
