The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地) offers visitors the best opportunity to observe China's beloved giant pandas in a setting designed to mimic their natural habitat. Located just 10 kilometers from downtown Chengdu, this 1000-acre facility has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in western China.
About the Panda Base
Established in 1987, the base was founded with just 6 pandas rescued from the wild. Today, it is home to over 180 giant pandas, along with other endangered species including red pandas and Takins. The facility has successfully bred over 300 panda cubs since its opening, making significant contributions to global conservation efforts.
Best Time to Visit
Morning visits between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM are strongly recommended. This is when pandas are most active, typically feeding on bamboo before their midday rest. Avoid visiting during Chinese public holidays when crowds can be overwhelming.
